The exhibition Photobooks from Latin America offers a complex panorama of the graphic and editorial photobook production in Latin America in the last five years. Among the great variety of the existing formats, this exhibition wants to pay tribute to the book creators who have been able to overcome all difficulties in order to propose several Latin American ways of making books. While maintaining their uniqueness, the inventive and recursive photobook makers in the region show there is not a singular way of editing, designing and printing photobooks, but that there are certain formats which can give more relevance to the visual story.

Saying that a photobook is Latin American means that it has been either designed or edited in the region, that it tells a story with the eyes of a photographer living in the region or it has been conceived for local readers.

Having those arguments in mind, Photobooks from Latin America is an exhibition that features a small selection of 70 photobooks from more than ten Latin American countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela). The books on display show how book creators have managed to overcome the difficulties related to the scarcity of materials, the limited resources available, and the narrow number of readers interested in this type of formats.

For this specific occasion, the exhibition puts a special focus on six books that have stood out the most for their editorial format, design and narrative structure or the context of their manufacture.

The visitor who enters the exhibition is invited to build his own visual cartography of Latin American photobooks through 70 of the most recent productions on display.

The Festival

Fotofestiwal was created in 2001. It was one of the first photographic events in Poland: a small-scale, spontaneous initiative of a group of Sociology students. Today, the festival is an international event attended by more than 20,000 people every year.

The festival is held annually in Łódź – a city with an exceptional industrial history, which has always been a source of inspiration for the organizers. The exhibitions are set in post-industrial settings: the Art_Inkubator festival centre in a former cotton storage facility or the impressive OFF Piotrkowska complex located in the heart of the city. We discover Łódź for ourselves as well as for our viewers – every year new venues are opened especially for festival events. All over the city you can enjoy over
30 exhibitions, organised in cooperation with local art galleries.
